Corporate Social Responsibility

Lex began its environment program in 1997 when colleagues recognised the responsibilities of its business and the contract hire industry's first ever Environment Unit was established by Lex.

Our aim was not just to save energy and promote recycling among the 1,200 employees on its three sites in Amersham, Stockport and Stirling - it was to educate customers and the entire fleet industry, about alternative choices.

The Unit became an integral part of the business and within six months Lex became the first company in the fleet industry to achieve environmental certification to ISO 14001. The overall aim was to generate a passion for the environment - not just a box ticking exercise.

Customers such as the MoD, The Woodland Trust and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency used Lex advice to make sweeping changes to their fleets - to make them cleaner.

Customers continue to be intrigued by the investment in video conferencing which complements both the environment and the safety aspects of driving.

Lex also took the bold decision to help set up Driving the Future, an alternative fuel motor show and adopt two campaigns, The Breathe Easy Campaign and its training program - Contract with the Future.

Lex is a very successful business - the UK's largest contract vehicle hire company, with over 250,000 vehicles in use and 1,200 employees based at five sites around the country.

To remain successful, we must shape the world to come.

At the heart of our Contract with the Future is the recognition that our continued success depends on extending our sense of corporate responsibility to the wider world. In it, we commit ourselves to taking every step we can to protect and secure quality of life for our mutual benefit, and the benefit of all our children.
